It was the second to last week for the Elite Summer Women’s Hockey League and what a performance it was by Team Blue as they won their third straight game by a score of 3-1 to clinch a winning summer season.
Just like the previous two weeks, Team Blue was dominant from the word go. Team Blue was powered by their top line of Paige Voight, Maureen Murphy, and Sammy Davis. The line combined for seven points on the night including two goals and five assists. Voight and Davis both had big nights. Voight recorded a goal (which turned out to be the game-winner) and an assist. She is now tied with her teammate Emily Field for the league lead in points with six. Voight is also now one off the league lead in goals with three. Davis had a big night recording three points including her first goal of the season. She also added two assists.
Outside of the top line, the story for Team Blue was the goaltending. Aerin Frankel got the start making her EWSHL debut. She was great for Team Blue as she allowed only one goal and picks up her first victory of the season. Like she did with Northeastern over the past three seasons, she gave her team a chance to win the hockey. And that is all you can ask from your goalie. Frankel made some big saves on Team Red’s top goal scorer Alex Carpenter.
Jetta Rackleff took over in the second half for Team Blue. Rackleff faced enormous pressure from Team Red as they looked to get back in the game. Unfortunately for Team Red, Rackleff was equal to the task. Rackleff came up with the save of the game if not the season when she robbed Abby Volo on the doorstep as Team Red tried to cut the deficit to one. It was a great performance by these two goaltenders. Rackleff has now recorded shutouts in two halves this season and was named player of the game.
Per usual Team Blue opened the scoring about five minutes into the period on a goal by Megan Keller. It was Keller’s first of the season. Davis and Voight picked up assists on the play. Shortly after that Voight made it 2-0 Team Blue with Murphy and Davis picking up the assists. Team Red cut the lead in half when Michaela Boyle was able to get one passed Frankel on a great feed by Gillis Frechette. That was Frechette’s sixth point up the season tying her with Field and Voight. However, the dagger came late in the first half when Davis got her first of the season from Murphy and Lindsey Dumond.
In her final game of the season, Team Red goalie Katie Burt gave up three goals and she played a great game, but just like last week, Team Red could not capitalize on their opportunities. They missed wide-open nets and did not convert on two power plays, which was the difference in the game. Caty Flagg played the second half for Team Red and she stopped every shot she faced.
Team Blue is now 4-2 on the season while Team Red drops to 2-3-1.
The final game of the EWSHL season goes next week at 6:30 pm.
