The three-time defending Hockey East Champions are getting a big boost to their offensive ranks. According to an Instagram post from the woman herself, Maureen Murphy is transferring to Northeastern University. The program also Tweeted on Monday that the native of Buffalo, New York is now a Huskie.
Murphy starred for the Providence College Friars in each of the last three seasons. She played in just eleven games this past season, but recorded seven goals and eleven points in the process. She scored a career-high 43 points (22 g, 21 a) in 37 games as a sophomore in 2018-19. Eight of her 22 goals that season were game winners.
Without Murphy for most of the season, the Friars played a blue-collar style and finished third overall in Hockey East. They were swept in the Quarterfinal 2-0 by the 6th seeded UNH Wildcats. Overall, the Friars went 18-14-4 on the season with a 15-10-2 Hockey East record.
The Huskies, meanwhile, won their second consecutive Hockey East regular season Championship and their third straight postseason title. They were set to host Princeton in an NCAA Quarterfinal in March, but the game was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Huskies lost key two-way center Matti Hartman to graduation, while defenders Codie Cross and Paige Capistran also graduated out.
The Huskies will add Murphy’s production to an offense that already boasts Alina Mueller, Chloe Aurard, Katy Knoll, Jess Schryver, Veronika Pettey and Mia Brown. Andrea Renner, who took a redshirt season in 2019-20, will be back in the lineup this fall. Renner scored eleven goals in her junior campaign in 2018-19.
