The Connecticut Whale have made their first signing for the 2020-21 NWHL season. On Wednesday, the club announced the signing of goaltender Brooke Wolejko. The Connecticut native returns to the Whale for a second season. She finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 2-8-1.
That record does not tell the whole story of her rookie campaign. Wolejko posted a save percentage of .914 and a goals against average of 3.62. She made 458 saves in just 14 games played.
In fact, Wolejko finished fourth among NWHL goaltenders in save percentage (.914) this past season. She also set a team record for saves in a season. Wolejko made at least 45 saves five times, and she averaged a league-best 38.55 saves per-60 minutes in the regular season, per the league.
Prior to joining the NWHL, Wolejko played four seasons of NCAA hockey. She started with three years at St. Lawrence University. She then transfered to SUNY-Plattsburgh for her senior season. There, she played 14 games and posted a save percentage of .962.
“Accepting the opportunity to re-sign with the Whale was an easy decision after such an unforgettable season,” Wolejko told the NWHL’s official website after signing. “I had a blast this season and am really grateful for the opportunity to continue playing the game I love. We showed a lot of grit and I’m really proud to be on a team with teammates who are so passionate, and coaches who believe in us.
“The NWHL’s commitment to advancing professional women’s hockey really shows the league’s belief in us as not only athletes, but as women. I am excited to be a part of building a future for our younger generation of female hockey players.” Wolejko was named one of the NWHL Fans’ Three Stars of the Season.
